COLORADO (KKTV) - The Royal Gorge Route Railroad launched a $100,000 community match campaign to benefit Aspen Acres Fire recovery on Thursday.

The funds go to the United Way of Southern Colorado, with a focus on meeting both the immediate needs of the people impacted, and supporting the long-term recovery process.

Railroad owner Mark Greksa said the United Way was the best recipient because their long-term commitment to the community.

100% of the funds go to “assist with housing, rebuilding efforts, financial assistance, mental health resources, case management, and other critical services for individuals and families affected by the wildfire.”

The first 100 people to donate $500 or more will receive a free ticket to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

The initiative comes from the organization’s desire to do more after helping to move hay for the livestock displaced by the wildfire.

“Put yourself in that position,” said Greksa. “You know, we’re all impacted by this... it’s such a devastating loss for so many people out there. You know, they’ve lost their homes.”
